Pinging for individual blog url or category feed
Posted by vinson at 6:44 am

I guess a lot of people are interested to know if pinging for individual blog url like http://www.myblog.com/2007/1/10/i-just-blog-today or pinging for a category feed like http://www.myblog.com/rss.php?feed=newly-added-category will end you up in the spam list. Basically what this means is when you had just updated a post, should you ping for this url that is generated for this post? Similarly, if this new post is filed under a category and there is a unique rss feed generated for this category, should you ping for this rss feed too?

Well, I hope this is not too confusing. In my opinion, as a ping is delivered, we basically pass in 2 parameters like blog url and blog feed. So, by pinging for the unique url generated after each post is fine because we are letting search engines and blog aggregators (endpoints) know that we have a new post at this particular url. On the other hand, if you are trying to ping for a different feed, then this is not advisable. The reason being that you are still pinging with the same url but a different feed and this may cause the endpoints to suggest that you are spamming with your blog url.

Conclusion, never ping too often with the same url and you will stay clear of the spam list. Hope this helps :)

Autopinger for blogger and MSN Space users
Posted by vinson at 10:57 am

Being both a blogger and MSN Space user who blogs pretty often about interesting things go around the internet. Having blogged for a year now, have people really discover what I posted in my blogs. Well, I doubt so. By default, blogger only pings weblogs.com for updates and MSN I have no clue of where my updates are relayed to as it is only stated as ping server.

The idea of blogging is to write things you love and share with the world but how can one achieve that without the world even knowing you ever existed. That puts me to think of a way to provide pinging mechanism for my own blogs. While pinging at pingomatic helps to broadcast my blog but it requires me to manual ping my blogs everytime and this doesn't sound like a good solution. Though pingomatic offers xmlrpc interface but it is only useful to more "ping friendly" software like Wordpress or Movable Types as they have built in xmlrpc support. This sets me thinking how can I relay my updates in an automatic manner!

Well, the conclusion is autopinger. Through some simple googling and research, I realise we can take advantage of the xmlrpc platform and consolidate all the ping jobs into one common location that is totally disconnected from our own blogs. With the great idea of feed discovery and wonderful feed parsing library, we can do crawl and check your blogs to see if you have updated your content and relay your updates to the world. This serves the basic purpose of pinging and cuts away the dependency of blogging softwares to provide the ping mechanism. Now, everyone can continue to use your favourite blogging software and have autopinger to ping for you!

Personally, I feel that this is no rocket science but it certainly helps people like myself and I believe millions of bloggers out there will like this convenience. It's a set-and-forget service and best of all, I have made this free for everyone! Go give it a try. sign up as a free member, set your blog information and you're done :-)

Oh, by the way, autopinger can help you autoping your podcasts too!

Use autopinger for blogger blogs
Posted by vinson at 12:08 pm

Blogger.com pings only weblogs.com by default and there isn't an option for you to ping other services. Here's the news, just set your blogs with autopinger and we will do that for you automatically!

On top of that, you don't have to manually ping these search engines and aggregators as we will keep a full list of all available services in on the Internet.

All you have to do is sign up for your free account and set your blog(s) url and that's it. Autopinger will crawl your blog(s) at 30mins interval and checks your blog(s). If autopinger discovers that you have updated your blog, it will proceed to ping all our available services for you on auto-pilot! So you just have to set once and forget about it.

And there are a couple of useful tools in there, go check it out!
